And for portability, that choice often leads you to something a bit larger than a netbook for performance, but small enough to comfortably carry around.įor Apple users this portable sweetspot is the 13-inch MacBook Pro.Īpple's 2010 13-inch (left) vs. Unfortunately having a set of notebooks and mobile devices isn't really an option for most. You may use some more often than others but having the entire set helps. You get a desktop-like screen resolution and mainstream desktop performance. And given how thin the system is, it's also not hard to make an argument for Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro. Other times you need to do actual work but don't need a ton of CPU horsepower that puts you into 13-inch notebook territory.įor even more productive beings there are larger 15 and 16-inch systems. Sometimes you don't need to do a lot but want to be able to couch around and browse the web on a tablet. There's simply a time and a place for everything. You can make arguments in favor of and against everything from the smartphone and tablet to 17" desktop replacement notebooks. I now would have preferred to have saved the $310 towards a new machine instead of putting it into a machine that's not used much.I'm convinced that there's no perfect mobile form factor.

The 2010 MBP that was repaired only serves as a backup computer to run beta software and distributed computing. I haven't had any problems with it, but I don't think it was worth the cost considering I have a 2013 MBP as my main machine now. They offered 90 day warranty for the repair.

Update (Since I get private message every month) By today's standards, it's still a good machine with an i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM.

Also want to mention that I had a new battery installed in 2013 within the warranty period and did an SSD upgrade on my own.

I'd like to get 2-3 more years of use out of this 2010 MBP.Įdit: Wanted to clarify that I can install Yosemite back onto it before bringing it to the Apple store. I just feel this just wears out the hardware even more. I am able to install Xubuntu linux onto it, which seems okay, but it does heat up with fans getting pretty loud. I'm aware of gfxCardStatus, but I'd rather not go that route.

This 2010 MBP is no longer my main computer, but I would like it as a functional second computer. If the fix was under $100, I would bring it in. I could bring it into Apple and see what they could do, but I read that they offer a $300+ fix for it since it is out of warranty and the eligibility period has ended.įor those of you that have brought theirs in and had it fixed, has it worked?ĭo they really address/fix the issue, or do they simply replace the defective hardware with the same, wherein the problem will arise again in a few years? I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro (MBP) with OS X Mavericks that started getting GPU panic issues where it would crash and restart almost daily. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
